2 Mainshill Cottages, Mainshill

2 Mainshill Cottages, built in 1872, is a single-storey, symmetrical group of three terraced farm cottages, each with three bays. The cottages are constructed from warm red sandstone that is stugged, squared, and snecked, featuring ashlar dressings, a cill course, stone mullions, and hoodmoulds on the east elevation.

The east elevation has nine bays and includes a timber-bracketed, piended canopy over the central doorway, which is flanked by tripartite windows. The outer bays are gabled and advanced, each with four-light windows and panels at the apex, with the right panel dated 1872. There are additional doorways in the penultimate bays without canopies, and bipartite windows in the outer bays.

Both the north and south elevations feature low gabled coal-sheds projecting at the center. The east elevation has catslide projections for each cottage, which were later extended with harled porch additions.

The cottages have large square-pane glazing patterns in their sash and case windows, and strip fanlights above the doorways. There are end and mutual gable stacks with moulded caps, and the roofs are covered with purple slates and timber bargeboards. However, numbers 3 and 4 have regrettably been altered with double glazed double swing windows, a modern dormer, and Velux windows added in 1990.
