Description

The Baptist Chapel is a mid-19th century building located on the west side of High Street in Lydney. It features a smooth rendered exterior and an asbestos-cement slate roof, which has a pedimented front and a hipped back. The chapel has a simple layout with attached school rooms at the back. The front facade has three bays, adorned with a heavy cornice supported by floral brackets at the ends, and a central pediment that displays a decorative cartouche.

The windows are tall, narrow arched casements with two lights, featuring Y-tracery and horizontal glazing bars, set within plat-band surrounds that include impost blocks and a keystone with a moulded impost. A central projecting porch has a steep pediment that includes the words 'Baptist Chapel' in a scrolled rococo style. The porch contains a pair of plank doors that match the window surrounds, accessed by three steps.

The sides of the chapel have three windows each, which are sash windows with six over nine panes, also featuring interlaced Y-tracery and simplified surrounds similar to those at the front, all set above stooled cills. Inside, the chapel has a plain ceiling with a rosette, a panelled gallery front, and pitch-pine pews. While simple, the chapel is notable within its context.
