Description
The Former Severn and Wye Railway Tramway Bridge is a tramway bridge built around 1810 for the Lydney and Lydbrook Canal Company, which later became part of the Severn and Wye Railway. It is constructed from squared and coursed stone with an ashlar parapet, and it is set on a curved alignment featuring voussoirs to a semi-circular arch. This bridge is a complete and rare example of a structure associated with a horse-drawn tramway, predating the introduction of steam-powered locomotion. The tramroad was developed to enhance the export of coal from the Forest of Dean, facilitating transport both up the Wye River to Hereford and to the Thames Valley via the basin at Lydney and the River Severn.
