Description
Althorpe House is a dwelling that has been converted into offices, dating from the late 17th century or early 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble that is rendered except for the front elevation, which features a sandstone plinth, brick dressings, and long and short quoins. It has late 20th century box eaves and a hipped roof covered with concrete tiles. The structure is long and narrow, with two storeys and six windows that are not regularly spaced. Most of the windows are 12-pane glazing-bar sashes, although the upper sash in bays 2 and 4 on the first floor, as well as the windows in bays 4, 5, and 6 on the ground floor, are casements.
At the centre of the front elevation is a large Roman Doric portico with four columns and a flat entablature, which is accessed by five steps leading up to two three-panelled doors beneath an elliptical fanlight. At the rear, there is an arched sash stair window. Inside, the board room on the ground floor to the left features a 19th-century cornice, circular ceiling decoration, and two elliptical-head recesses. The entrance hall has a moulded cornice.
