Description

The Market Cross in Lydney is a historical structure dating back to the 14th century, although it was restored in 1878 by Reverend William Haley Bathurst of Lydney Park and again in 1957 through public donations. It is made of sandstone and features seven plain steps arranged in a pyramid shape, with an eighth step that has a square nosing chamfered back to a vertical riser. This step supports a square base that includes ogee-head cinquefoil headed niched recesses set on a chamfered base, topped with a steep chamfered top. The original shaft and cross are missing. An inset tablet on the north side notes the restorations.
