Description
Capel Tan-y-coed is a chapel built in a Classical, mildly Italianate style. It features rendered rubblestone with plaster quoins and window and door dressings, topped with a slate roof that has red ceramic ridge detailing. The entrance is located on the north-east gable end and consists of three bays, with a central steeply pedimented section and outer bays that have panelled parapets above a broken cornice. The central area has a tall round-arched recess with quoins at the impost level, which continues in a moulded form with a keystone above. This recess contains a round-headed entrance with panelled doors, a plain fanlight, and a moulded Doric entablature above. Above the entrance is a 2-light window adorned with Doric pilasters and entablature, and above that is raised lettering that reads "TAN. Y. COED/ MC/ 1901". The outer bays feature 12-paned margin light sashes set in round-headed recesses with keystones and imposts, which are repeated in five bays along the long roadside elevation. A single-storey link, set back on the south-west gable end, connects the chapel to an adjoining Sunday School/Vestry.
The interior is plain yet dignified. The roof consists of five bays of hammerbeam type, featuring slender circular tie beams with baluster moulding. The outer sections are panelled, while the centre section has coved timber boarding and decorated circular ventilators with pendants. The rendered walls are lined to resemble ashlar. The raking floor is fitted with numbered box pews, and the internal porch at the entrance end has half-glazed doors with chamfered lower panels, along with an Art Nouveau stained glass panel in the centre. The set fawr is flanked by chamfered four-panel doors with plain mid-20th century wall tablets above. It includes a balustraded enclosure, a reading desk, and steps leading to a pulpit set in a round-arched recess, which is embellished with fluted Doric pilasters, floral spandrels, and a garlanded cornice frieze. The link to the Vestry/Sunday School has a slate floor.
