Description

The boundary wall, gateways, and turrets at Bryn Bras Castle are constructed from rubblestone and vary in height. The wall follows the road, with a section to the south-east of the south-east entrance being irregularly coursed, while the remainder is made of larger, more regularly coursed blocks. It includes two gateways and ends with a turret to the north-west.

The south-eastern gateway, located opposite the entrance to Brynteg Caravan Park, is simple in design, featuring large square piers with narrow 'arrow' slits topped by opposing armorial shields and iron gates with 'A'-bracing for Alves. The main gateway, situated opposite Fernlea, is more elaborate, flanked by circular corbelled and crenellated turrets beside a segmental archway with a battlemented parapet. The centre of this archway displays the Alves coat-of-arms and a wheatsheaf, with nail-studded wooden double gates featuring massive strap hinges and a wicket door on the right. Each turret has a stone plaque with the letter 'A' on the front.

To the left of this main gateway, the wall slopes down and continues downhill under the archway over the road. To the right of this archway is a nail-studded doorway that provides access to the castle. The wall then rises in height, culminating in a tall circular turret with an embattled parapet. A wall extends at right angles from the left turret of the main gateway, ending in a similar turret. Water emerges from the battered base of this turret, cascading into a pool below the stream that runs beneath the drive. An iron light bracket projects from beneath the corbelled parapet of this turret.
