Description

The statue is a stone figure of a gladiator, inspired by Antonio Canova's sculpture that was commissioned by Pope Pius VII around 1796. The original sculpture is currently housed in the Vatican Museum in Rome. This statue stands on a tall plinth with a moulded base and capping, but it no longer holds the shield and sword that it once had in its left and right hands.
