Description

The statue is a stone figure of a gladiator, copied from a sculpture by Antonio Canova that was commissioned by Pope Pius VII around 1796. The original sculpture is currently housed in the Vatican Museum in Rome. This statue stands on a high plinth with a moulded base and capping, but it is missing the disc or shield that it once held in its left hand above its head.
