Description
The Methodist Chapel, built around 1814, features Flemish-bond brickwork with ashlar quoins and a rubble stone plinth. The rear gable is rendered, likely over stone, and the building has a tiled roof. It has three windows along the front, with a plain gable facing the road. A central gabled porch, added in the late 19th century, is single-storey and has a blue brick plinth. The porch includes a pointed-headed boarded door with blue-brick voussoirs, stone springers, and a keystone. There are small lancet windows on the sides of the porch and one on the left side of the main gable, each with wooden frames and voussoirs above the doorway. Above the porch, a central projection in the gable rises just below the ridge and may have been a former chimney. The right side of the building has two rows of windows with semi-circular heads, brick-on-edge voussoirs, a timber mullion and transom, and one top-hung iron casement with leaded lights. The central window in the lower row was originally a doorway. A late 19th-century lean-to on the left side was likely built as a Sunday School, and there are 20th-century extensions at the rear. Inside, there is a flat ceiling and a gallery across the road gable with a simply-panelled front, supported by two 20th-century iron columns, with access via a dogleg stair. The chapel forms a group with Birdwood House located opposite.
