Description

Bwlchnewydd Baptist Chapel is a building of 1802, rebuilt in 1831, constructed of unpainted roughcast with stucco channelled angle piers, and has a slate half-hipped roof. The front gable features an added centre porch. Above the door, set into the right side wall of the porch, is a date plaque reading "Bwlchnewydd Baptist Chapel Built 1802 Rebuilt 1831". Inside the porch is an original double-panelled door and a fanlight with marginal glazing. The porch front has a blank arched window. The side walls each contain one long, central window with a flat head, fitted with earlier 20th-century glazing. The left side is of whitewashed rubble stone and also features a doorway to the right with stone voussoirs. The rear wall is similarly whitewashed rubble and has two large arched windows with earlier 20th-century glazing.

A single-storey, roughcast vestry is attached to the east side, with an imitation slate roof and a plastic window replacing a 12-pane sash. It has a door on the right side and a 20th-century stack at the right end. The rear wall of the vestry is of whitewashed rubble.

The interior is plastered, featuring a three-sided roof. The main part of the roof is of 20th-century plasterboard, while the sloping sides are later 19th-century boarding. A single gallery is present on the entrance end, supported by four plain posts. The gallery front is characterised by a plain frieze and cornice over the posts, followed by three long horizontal panels separated by four pilasters with square blocks above and below. The panels include inset rectangular panels with rebated corners, each featuring a square knot. The centre panel also includes a vertical rectangle that interrupts the long inset panel. A thin moulded top rail completes the gallery front.

The chapel contains painted, grained panelled box pews arranged in three blocks, with roll-mould tops. A matching three-sided great seat is present, with rebated angles and doors, and two inward-facing box-pews on each side. The painted, grained pulpit platform features winding steps on each side, a boarded base, turned balusters, turned newels, and ball finials. The slightly projected solid pulpit front has a plain, broad pointed panel with a bookrest on metal brackets. Behind the pulpit is a small timber aedicule with part-fluted pilasters, an open pediment, and a flaming urn above. The lobby is three-sided, with a margin-glazed window in the centre and coloured glass margins. There are four-panel doors on each canted side. Gallery steps are present on one side only, with the lower flight removed. The gallery itself has raked pews similar to those below.
