Description

Capel Pendref is a classical style chapel dating from 1791. It is situated above street level and accessed by stone steps with iron railings on both sides. The front facade is finished with roughcast rendering and features a slate roof hipped to the front, concealed behind a parapet with a ridge ventilator. The doorway has a rusticated surround topped with a dentil cornice, flanked by two Tuscan columns in antis framing double fielded-panel doors and matching side panels. Small, round-headed, recessed niches are positioned on either side of the entrance. Above the doorway are four gallery windows with small panes, the two central windows featuring corbelled sills and architraves topped with triangular pediments on fluted consoles, while the outer windows have similar architraves with segmental pediments. The parapet sits on a moulded cornice and is decorated with Tuscan pilasters and coping, culminating in a central low pediment displaying the date 1791.

The side and rear walls are pebble-dashed. The side walls feature four gallery windows with segmental-headed 12-pane sashes, while the lower level has three similar sashes, along with a smaller stair window with a 16-pane sash facing the front. The sashes on the left side are hornless, while those on the right side have horns. The rear of the building has two segmental-headed sash windows with coloured marginal glazing and intersecting tracery incorporating etched glass. A single-storey, lean-to vestry is located on the right side and has two boarded-up windows.

A window within the vestibule provides a view into the main chapel, featuring intersecting Gothic glazing bars with coloured and etched glass. Double doors lead from the vestibule into the main chapel, panelled on the vestibule side only. Gallery stairs are situated on the left and right sides, rising in two flights to landings. The ceiling of the main chapel presents a moulded cornice and arched coving leading to large square panels with moulded ribs, diagonal-boarded infill and decorative roses to the centre and corner panels. A three-sided raked gallery is supported by cast iron posts, projecting on iron brackets, with additional moulded wooden brackets and a panelled soffit. The gallery front is panelled with moulded relief ornament and incorporates a clock by Hughes & Co of Caernarfon. The “set fawr” (pulpit area) has an open balustrade dating from 1881, above paneling from 1862. The 1881 pulpit itself features round-arched panels, consoles supporting a book rest, and is flanked by curved steps with turned balusters and newels. A reredos sits behind the pulpit, composed of pairs of Corinthian pilasters, a moulded cornice, and a round arch with two tiers of relief decoration, including an anthemion frieze. A door to the left of the pulpit leads to a small vestry. The main chapel contains low, box pews, while the gallery has benches with moulded ends, all dating from 1862.
