Description

24 Bangor Street is part of a row of 6 shops with dwellings above, forming a unified Victorian classical composition of 3 storeys with attic. The building is painted roughcast with a slate roof, retaining mainly original thick slates though partly renewed.

The front elevation is richly articulated in a bold Victorian classical style. Each premises occupies 2 bays, with number 14 (right-hand) being narrower than the others. The ground-storey shop fronts are framed by bold fluted Ionic pilasters supporting a fascia and cornice that incorporates a dentil frieze. At number 22, a late 19th-century shop front has been inserted through the pilasters, though the cornice of the original fascia remains partially visible. Above the shops, panelled pilasters articulate each floor separately, rising to an entablature and a deep bracketed eaves cornice.

The middle storey features windows with moulded sill bands, Corinthian pilasters, and moulded tympana decorated with anthemion and other relief foliage, the moulding continuing as an impost band. Capitals to the pilasters are missing at numbers 18, 20 and 22. Number 22 retains its original 4-pane sash windows; windows in the other premises have been replaced. The upper storey windows have corbelled sill bands and moulded keyed architraves. Numbers 20, 22 and 24 retain original 4-pane sash windows; the remainder are replaced. The end premises (numbers 14 and 24) retain their original dormers. Number 24's left side has a pair of 4-pane sash windows, although the gable has been removed. The right side features a pair of replaced windows beneath a cornice on foliage-enriched consoles, a gable with plain barge boards, and a semi-circular panel with anthemion and other foliage in relief.

The right side wall is of scribed roughcast with an angle pilaster and cornice over the shop window. Above are replaced windows within original moulded architraves. A central attic window has a renewed sash, and to the right is a renewed tall narrow stair window. The angle pilaster is partly missing, likely due to demolition of a previously attached building.

The rear elevations are 2-window compositions in roughcast (rendered at number 18), with half dormers and tall narrow stair lights on the right side, except number 14 which has a stair window in the side wall. Some original sash windows are retained.

The shop front and door at number 24 are late 20th-century insertions.
