Description

Capel y Garn is a chapel dating back to 1833, with substantial alterations in 1900. It has a lateral wall facade and a slate roof with a red crested ridge tile. The original facade was plain rubble stone, featuring 3 sixteen-pane upper sash windows, two twenty-four-pane centre windows, and a plain boarded door on each side. These elements remain, although they are now largely concealed by a 1900 remodelling which incorporated painted lined stucco and bracketted eaves. The centre gable has a pediment supported by two pilasters with foliated capitals and moulded bases, above twin arched tall windows with leaded glazing and timber bars. Linked sills and imposts, along with moulded hoods with key-stones, are also present. A keyed roundel window sits above this feature. A cartouche tablet is set into the gable, displaying the inscription 'GARN 1900', flanked by cherubs. The outer bays display similar pilasters, paired with quoin strips at the outer angles. Double three-panel doors are set within moulded architraves topped with pediments on consoles. Gallery lights above are large six-pane windows with leaded glazing and moulded surrounds. The south end is clad in slate dating from 1833, with a plain projecting verge. There are two windows on each floor, matching those on the front facade. The west rear elevation is of rubble stone with six stone-voussoired windows, again similar in style. The north end has three windows like the south side, with the fourth replaced by a later north extension.

The interior is notable for its gallery, added in 1865, which wraps around three sides with rounded angles. Four cast-iron pillars support the gallery on each side, featuring acanthus leaf capitals and marbled graining. The rear west gallery is supported by four ornate corbels and sits above a 1900 vestry. The gallery front is adorned with long timber panels, finished with contrasting graining. Panelled piers are positioned between the panels, along with a central west clock from 1865. A wall clock inscribed 'A P Jones Aberystwyth 1866' is located under the north gallery. The gallery includes grained pine box-pews from 1865, with flat ends and panelled backs. Lower pews, dating from 1900, are of pitch-pine, open, with flat chamfered panels, flat-topped ends, and roll-moulded tops. A pulpit, temporarily removed in 1996 for conservation work, is situated on a stepped platform on the east wall, beneath the central windows. A great-seat features curved ends and a rail with turned balusters. Entrance lobbies are located under the gallery ends on either side of the pulpit, with gallery stairs. The interior features six-panel doors, two-light windows with etched glass and coloured margins, and encaustic tile floors. The vestry contains a centre panelled door flanked by sash windows, similar to those in the lobbies. The chapel has a plastered coffered ceiling with two ceiling-vent roses, and queen-post trusses support the roof above.
