Description

Penrhiw is a small lofted cottage that is part of a short terrace, dating from the late 19th century. It features painted, lined stucco over earth walls, a gabled slated roof, and a yellow-brick chimney at the north end. The eaves and verge are flush. The cottage has a single-unit, double-pile plan. The west front has one door positioned at the extreme right and a central hornless 12-pane sash window. The door is ledged with a 6-pane overlight, and the window has a slate sill.

On the north end, there are two small slate-roofed lean-tos and a 4-pane horned sash window in the loft. The render has fallen away in the gable, exposing the earth walling. One lean-to has similar stucco and features a single tilting 12-pane window. The north end also includes a door leading to a former shop on the left, while the left lean-to is slightly higher and has a ledged door. The rear of the cottage is rendered but shows exposed patches of earth, with a transom and mullion casement window and a small 2-light casement to the left. There are three small ruinous brick outshuts.

Inside, the front door opens to an enclosed stair at the south end. The front room has plastered walls with an exposed patch of wattle and daub partition, a slate-flagged floor, exposed joists, and ledge and brace doors. There is a north fireplace with a range, and a door on the left leads to an outshut with a bread oven and a glazed wall cabinet. The rear parlour also contains two glazed cabinets. An under-stair door opens to a dairy with a slate cold-slab and tiled floor. The stair leads to two attic rooms, which have a centre collar-truss partition and door. The roof timbers are adze-dressed square, with iron bolts securing the collars.
