Description

The war memorial in Huntley dates from around 1921 and is made of stone with inlaid lead inscriptions. It features a cross on an octagonal shaft, which stands on a stepped octagonal pedestal and a wider, stepped octagonal base. At the top of the cross is a calvary. The main inscription, also inlaid in lead, reads: "ERECTED / TO THE MEMORY OF / THE MEN / OF THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / ALSO 1939-1945." The other seven sides list the names of 20 men who died in World War One and two who died in World War Two. Surrounding the memorial are spear-headed railings, with access provided by a pedestrian gate between iron piers that have moulded caps.

The memorial was first shown on the 1922 Ordnance Survey map and was established to honor the 20 men from the village who lost their lives during World War One. It is prominently located at the eastern end of the village along the main Ross-on-Wye to Gloucester road (A40). After World War Two, the names of those who died in that conflict were added.

This war memorial is designated at Grade II due to its significance as a poignant reminder of the impact of global events on the community, its quality of design and craftsmanship, and its group value with the nearby listed stocks in this public area of the village.
