Description
The war memorial in Fremington was built around 1919. It features a granite Celtic cross on an elongated shaft, which is set on a tapered rectangular plinth elevated on a stone base. The south face of the plinth lists the names of those who lost their lives during the First World War, accompanied by the inscription: 'IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918'. Below this, it reads 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'. The east face of the memorial displays the names of those who fell in the Second World War. This memorial is prominently located within the village, near the Church of St Peter and Fremington Manor, both of which are listed at Grade II*.
It was erected to honor the men of the parish who died in the First World War and was later updated to include those who fell in the Second World War. The memorial serves as a significant reminder of the impact of these global conflicts on the local community and holds group value with the nearby Church of St Peter.
