Description
Westaway Cottage is a cottage that was formerly a small tenement farmhouse, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with extensions made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of rendered stone and cob, topped with a thatch roof featuring gable ends. There is a rendered stack at the left gable end and an axial rendered stack. The cottage has a small three-room plan, with the stack backing onto a former passage. The front doorway has been blocked, and a lower partition has been removed. The lower end of the cottage has been converted from a dairy to a bathroom and staircase. A two-storey 20th-century wing, also with a thatch roof, has been added to the rear at the left end, creating an overall L-shaped plan. The cottage has two storeys and a five-window range with 20th-century fenestration. Although the interior has been altered, the roof structure over the main range still features a closed late 17th century to early 18th century truss with trenched purlins and straight heavy principals, with no signs of smoke-blackening.
