Description

The Old Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, with a rear extension added in the 20th century. It is built of rendered stone and cob, topped with an asbestos slate roof. The building features a stack at the left gable end and an axial rubble stack with a tapered cap. Originally designed with a three-room through-passage plan, the rear doorway is now blocked, and the hall stack backs onto the passage. The two-storey structure has an overall L-shaped plan due to the 20th-century extension at the rear left end.

The front has a three-window range of 20th-century three-light casements, with diamond leaded panes in the right-hand windows. The ground floor includes a gabled porch with a slate roof, leading to a six-panelled door with glazed upper panels. To the right of the porch is a two-light window with two panes per light, alongside a three-light casement with four panes per light. To the left, there is another two-light window with two panes per light, and a two-light casement with six panes per light.

Inside, there is a plank and muntin screen between the hall and the inner room, which is six panels wide. The muntins and headrail are chamfered on the hall side, and there is a doorway at the right end with a renewed timber surround. The ceiling beams have been renewed, although some original joists remain. A single raised cruck truss forms a closed partition over the hall and inner room, with some renewed timber. The roof structure has been replaced in the 20th century, and there are no signs of smoke-blackening.
