Description
The Cottage is a house located on Fremington Higher Road, possibly originally two cottages. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and has undergone alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of rendered cob and stone, topped with a thatch roof. The roof features a gable end on the left with a brick stack, and a rendered stone stack with a tapered cap on the right end.
The house is designed as a two-cell structure with a central wide through-passage that originally contained a staircase, which was removed in 1985 and was located beside the stack at the right end. It has two storeys and a three-window range featuring 19th and 20th century two-light casements, each with six panes per light. A 20th century porch with a thatch roof is present, along with a buttress at the left end. There is a slate roof covering a former dairy outshut at the rear. Inside, there is a scroll-stopped chamfered beam and a fireplace lintel in the room at the right end. The roof structure was replaced in the 20th century.
