Description
The war memorial in Fletching, dating from around 1920, consists of a stone block wall topped with a three-stepped base, plinth, and an approximately eight-foot tall stone Latin cross. A sword of sacrifice is mounted on the front face of the cross, facing southwest. An engraved piece of Portland stone, about four feet high, is also oriented southwest and bears the inscription: "1914 THE GREAT WAR 1919/ IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE/ BRAVE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM." This inscription is followed by the names of those who died in the First World War and those who died in "1939 THE WORLD WAR 1945," totaling thirty-nine names. The memorial is intact and is set into the churchyard wall in the center of Fletching village.
