Description
The war memorial is a cross set on the churchyard wall, dating from around 1920. It is a smaller version of the Cross of Sacrifice designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield. The memorial is made of Portland stone and is raised on a square pedestal constructed from flint and brick, which is adjacent to the churchyard wall of similar materials.
The slender, tapering stone cross stands about 2 meters high and faces north. It features a stone sword in relief on the front, with an octagonal section for the upright and cross arms that have flattened domed octagonal finials. The cross has a square base that transitions concavely to the octagonal section. The hollow chamfered square base, with chamfered angles, rests on a large inscribed plinth-block that also has chamfered angles, and there is a square stone step atop the flint pedestal.
The inscription on the north side reads: "TO/THE GLORY OF GOD/AND/IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/THIS PARISH WHO MADE THE/SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE/GREAT WAR/1914-1918/SO HE PASSED OVER AND ALL THE/TRUMPETS SOUNDED FOR HIM ON THE/OTHER SIDE." An additional inscription for 1939-1945 is located at the back.
