Description
This building, now divided into four separate houses at Numbers 9, 11 (Vine Cottage), 13 (Swift Cottage), and 15, likely began as a 17th-century or earlier house. A gabled front extension was added in the late 17th century (Vine Cottage), with a further extension to the west side of this section in the late 18th century (Number 9). This western extension was originally two houses and later included a rear outshut. A more recent extension was built in the late 20th century on the north side of the main range.
The house is timber-framed, with the frame now visible only on the west wall of the eastern wing. The rest of the exterior is a mix of red brick infilling, brick casing, and extensions. It has steep old red tile roofs and a hipped roof on the eastern wing. The building faces south in a mostly L-shape, with a projecting eastern crosswing. A large internal chimney rises through the front roof slope about a third of the way from the west end.
The western portion of the front is obscured by a gabled, two-storey projection with an external side chimney on the east. A further two-storey block extends west, featuring a catslide rear outshut and a central internal chimney. The western extension (Number 9) has a symmetrical south front with two casement windows on each floor, as well as two battened doors near the corners. Number 11 has replaced casement windows and a 20th-century porch. Number 13, set back in the middle, has a plank door between two small-paned casement windows on each floor.
The eastern wing (Number 15) faces east with a segmental front featuring two two-light casement windows on each floor and a central door. The south end of this wing has a two-light casement window above a three-light casement window. This wing has both an internal and a northern gable internal chimney. Exposed framing and a blocked three-light window are visible on the west wall.
