Description
This is a former mill and adjoining house, known as The Mill, situated in South Cerney. The mill likely dates from the late 18th century, while the house may originate from the late 17th century and was extended in the 19th century. Local accounts suggest a mill has stood on this site since the Domesday Book.
The mill is constructed of coursed rubble stone with a corrugated-iron roof, and has a brick end stack on the house side. It is a two-storey single block with windows of irregular placement, with newer windows at the rear but retaining original timber lintels. Beam ends are set into the walls. A doorway is located on the far left of the rear elevation, while a stable door is nearly central to the front, with another door directly above it. Inside, some cast-iron columns support the first floor. The hole for the mill wheel remains visible, although the wheel itself is no longer in place.
The house is built of rubble stone, partially faced in roughcast, with a stone slate roof, a brick ridge stack, and brick stacks to a 19th-century wing. It features a single main range, with a small, projecting, rear gabled wing slightly off-centre, and a 19th-century rear wing at one end, alongside a slate-roofed lean-to. The rear elevation retains some original leaded casements with timber lintels. The front was altered, probably in the 19th century, to include three paired casements on the first floor and three-light windows below, with a small gabled porch located to the right of centre.
