Description

This is a late 17th and 18th century mill and mill house, subsequently used as cottages and a mill, and now a house. It has undergone alterations in the 19th century, with further changes in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of painted uncoursed rubble, with rendered cob above, and rendered gable ends and rear. The roof is covered in scantle slate, with a later addition featuring a gable-ended Welsh slate roof. Stone stacks are present, topped with 20th-century brickwork.

The building’s layout is a four-room plan, formerly incorporating a mill to the south, facing south-east. It likely began as a late 17th-century two-room house to the left, featuring a central axial stack and a dog-leg staircase located in the rear corner of the left-hand room. A further two-room addition to the left followed in the 18th century. A smaller room is situated to the right, with an external lateral stack to the rear. The former mill occupies the right-hand side, originally featuring an external waterwheel at the end wall, although the end stack is likely a later addition. A 19th-century wing, formerly adjoining the left-hand end, has since been demolished.

The front elevation has five windows. The upper floor has four probably 19th-century, 2-light, small-paned wooden casements, alongside one 18th-century two-light, leaded wooden-framed metal casement to the right. The ground floor features three probable 19th-century, 2-light, small-paned wooden casements to the right, one with a segmental head, and two probably 20th-century, two-light, leaded casements to the left, with straight joints indicating former doorways. A 20th-century two-leaf boarded door is situated to the left, and another boarded door is positioned off-centre to the right. An outbuilding projects forward between the right-hand window and the door. The left-hand return front of the building has a 20th-century wooden casement and three boarded doors with wooden lintels. A small 19th-century two-light wooden casement is found in the right-hand return front.

Internally, the ground-floor rooms of the original late 17th-century cottage on the left feature chamfered cross beams. The left-hand room contains an open fireplace with a bread oven, while the right-hand room has an open fireplace with a wooden lintel and a bread oven with a cast-iron door. The small right-hand ground-floor room boasts an open fireplace to the rear and a likely reset 17th-century door in the right-hand wall. The former mill area contains no remaining original machinery. The roof space shows five bays to the right of the ridge stack with 17th-century principal rafter trusses featuring collars.
