Description

Little Rapscott is a farmhouse, now a house, likely built in the late 17th century with alterations made in the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed of cob on a stone rubble plinth, with the front and sides rendered. The roof is a gable-ended design covered with modern asbestos-slate. At the rear, there is a stone stack with weatherings and a 19th-century red-brick chimney, as well as a 19th-century brick ridge stack on the left.

The building has a four-room plan typical of the 17th century, facing south, with the ground falling to the left. The layout includes a hall with an integral lateral stack at the rear and an entrance on the front right. To the left is a probable service room, with a former dairy beyond, and an upper room to the right that may have been an inner room, now serving as a kitchen, with an entrance in the gable end. The eaves were raised in the 19th century, and the house has two storeys.

The exterior features an asymmetrical arrangement of windows, with three on the first floor and four on the ground floor. Most of the windows are 19th-century boxed four-pane sashes, except for a small two-pane sash on the ground floor to the left. There is a 19th-century boarded door located between the first and second windows from the right, framed with beaded pegs, and another doorway in the right-hand gable end.

Inside, the walls are plastered, and there is an 18th-century door between the hall and the left-hand ground-floor room, along with old boarded doors leading to the first floor. The roof space has not been inspected.

This house is part of a larger farmstead group that includes Great Rapscott Farmhouse and Little Rapscott.
