Description

Hedgeland Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around the mid to late 17th century, with 20th-century renovations. It is constructed of cob on stone rubble footings, with the front elevation colourwashed and rendered, while the rear remains unrendered. The roof is made of corrugated asbestos and is half-hipped at the ends, having formerly been thatched. The building features a projecting rear lateral stone rubble stack with a truncated brick shaft, as well as an axial stack.

The plan consists of three rooms with a through passage, which may have originally been a four-room layout in the 17th century. Currently, there are two rooms to the left of the passage, one of which is heated by the rear lateral stack and was likely the kitchen, while the narrow unheated dairy is at the left end. The room to the right of the passage has a stack backing onto the passage and was probably the hall in the 17th century. There is some evidence of a former inner room at the right end, and the dairy has been integrated into the house. A cob and stone lean-to is located at the rear in the center, along with a likely 19th-century brick service room to the rear left.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical two-window front with 20th-century casements and a gabled porch leading into the passage. The front door features a moulded frame.

Inside, there is a plank and muntin screen between the passage and the lower end room, with the screen being more finely finished on the passage side. The lower end room has a chamfered stopped cross beam, and while the 20th-century grate may conceal earlier features, the earlier lintel is visible on the return of the jamb at the hall stack. The roof has pegged apex trusses that likely date from the 18th century. Overall, Hedgeland Farmhouse retains some original features, although others may be hidden behind modern plaster.
