Description

East Dunster Barn is a late 18th or early 19th century linhay, a traditional farm building. It has a rectangular plan with a central cob wall running almost the full length, creating two sides, and a separate room at the north-east end set at a right angle to the main barn.

The building is timber-framed with stone, cob, and brick walls, and a roof covered in Roman clay tiles and corrugated iron. The lower portions of the walls are random rubble sandstone with cob above, and red brick has been added to the eastern end. The timber frame is constructed using oak posts on granite padstones. The north-east room has entrances on both sides, accessed through inserted brick arches. The roof is supported by triangular trusses and has a hipped design at each end.

Inside, the central cob wall divides the linhay, and the north-east room contains three cow stalls and access to an upper floor. The north-west half has six cow stalls with troughs, and a closely boarded upper floor with an opening along the central cob wall. The opposite half is open at ground level, with the remains of a trough against the dividing wall, and widely spaced timbers supporting the upper floor. The ground floor is a combination of earth and concrete.

The building is a good example of a rare late 18th or early 19th century double-sided linhay and remains substantially complete.
