Description

Brindiwell Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid-17th century, which was renovated after a fire around 1940. The building features plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble stacks topped by 20th-century brick, and a slate roof that was originally thatch. It has a three-room-and-cross-passage plan and faces southwest, with a service room located at the left (northwest) end. There are gable end stacks for the service and inner rooms, as well as an axial stack at the upper end of the hall. The house is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical but somewhat regular six-window front, featuring casements from around 1940, including one with leaded glass.

To the left of centre, there is a passage door with a 20th-century gabled porch, and a secondary door at the right end leads to the inner room, which is sheltered by an outbuilding. Despite the fire damage that required a complete roof replacement, the ground floor remains largely original. Both sides of the passage are lined with oak plank-and-muntin screens that are chamfered with scroll stops. The lower screen includes a segmental-headed doorframe. The crossbeam in the service room is chamfered with run-out stops, while the hall features a double ovolo-moulded crossbeam with facetted step stops. The inner room, now used as a kitchen, has a chamfered crossbeam with scroll stops. All fireplaces in the house are currently blocked.
