Description

Smith Hayne Farmhouse is likely a mid-17th century farmhouse, significantly modernised and extended around 1970. It is constructed from plastered cob with exposed rubble footings, featuring rubble stacks topped with 20th-century brick and a slate roof. The building is L-shaped, with the original main range facing south-east.

The original farmhouse consisted of a gable-ended two-room main range, incorporating a central through passage originally wide enough to accommodate a staircase (now replaced), and a rear kitchen/service range set at a right angle behind the south-west end. Gable-end stacks serve all three rooms and outshots extend across the back of the main range. A single-room extension was added around 1970 to the north-east of the main block.

The front facade, dating from around 1970, has a balanced three-window arrangement of casements with glazing bars, and a central door with a small side light, leading to the passage of the original house. The interior retains the original room layout. To the right of the passage, a full-height internal cob crosswall is present, and the parlour to the right has a plain chamfered crossbeam, originally intended for plasterwork, and a fireplace constructed with impressive volcanic ashlar, an oak lintel with a flattened elliptical arch, and a chamfered surround. Remains of a large, inserted 18th-century brick bread oven are visible on the left side. A lower-status room to the left of the passage features a crossbeam with a double ovolo moulding with scroll stops, and a rubble fireplace with a chamfered and scroll-stopped oak lintel. The roof is currently inaccessible.
