Description

Barnshill Cottage is a house and adjoining cottage, likely dating from the early 18th century, that was modernised in the mid-20th century. The main block is a three-room farmhouse with a two-room cottage set at a right angle behind the right (east) end. The walls are plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble stacks, some featuring 19th-century brick chimney shafts, and a thatched roof. The house has a roughly L-shaped plan. The front of the main block faces south and features a regular, though not symmetrical, four-window arrangement with late 19th and 20th-century replacement casement windows, all with glazing bars. A 20th-century door is located to the left of the centre, protected by a 20th-century open-sided, flat-roofed porch. The original door, formerly located to the right, is now blocked by a 20th-century window. Gable ends are present on the left, while the right side of the roof is hipped. Stacks project from each end of the building. The rear cottage has a 20th-century four-panel door with a flat hood supported by shaped brackets. The interior has been significantly modernised; however, the original roof structure remains, consisting of plain A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars.
