Description
Cross Cottage is a house that originally served as both a residence and an adjoining shop. It has origins dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with extensions likely added in the late 17th to early 18th century. The building was rearranged in the early 19th century and underwent renovation around 1984. It features plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble stacks topped by 19th and 20th-century brick, and a thatched roof.
The structure consists of a two-room main block with a lower and narrower one-room extension to the right, facing the road to the east. There is an axial stack between the main block and the extension, along with a projecting rear lateral stack that has an adjoining newel turret. The building is two storeys high and has an irregular front with various casements. The main block has three ground floor casements and one first floor casement on the right, while the extension has two ground floor casements and one first floor casement on the right. All these windows are late 19th and 20th-century casements with glazing bars, except for the ground floor right window of the main block and the first floor window of the extension, which are late 17th to early 18th-century flat-faced mullion windows featuring some rectangular leaded glass.
Access to the house is now through the rear of the main block. Inside, the main block contains two late 16th to early 17th-century chamfered and step-stopped crossbeams, although the fireplace has been rebuilt, the roof structure has been renewed, and the partitions are framed with 19th-century brick nogging. The extension, which was used as a shop in the 19th century, has plain carpentry details. The building is included for its group value.
