Description

Dore's Cottage is a house that was later used as a shop, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with an addition from the late 17th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and has a stone slate roof, although the rear features machine tiles from the 20th century. The building consists of four half bays and has a cross passage that is off-centre to the right. It is one storey high with an attic.

On the left side, there is a large integral brick end stack, while the rear has an external stone lateral stack with a brick shaft, and there is a brick ridge stack to the right. To the left, there are a pair of gabled semi-dormers featuring 2- and 3-light wooden casements. The ground floor includes a 19th-century square bay window on the left, which was formerly a shop window, consisting of three 1-light sections, and to the right, there is a 3-light small-paned 19th-century wooden casement with a wooden lintel.

The late 17th-century projecting gabled wing is off-centre to the right and has an integral brick end stack. It features a 2-light wooden casement in the attic and a 2-light wooden casement on the ground floor, both with wooden lintels. To the left of a glazed nail-studded door, there is a 19th-century four-panelled half-glazed door with a wooden lintel. There is a blocked former cross-passage doorway to the right of the wing, identifiable by straight joints and a wooden lintel.

Inside, the cottage has chamfered ceiling beams and a large inglenook fireplace in the right-hand room, which has a wooden lintel and monolithic stone jambs. There is a blocked corner fireplace in the front wing and a 17th-century oak winder staircase at the front. The floors are made of old oak boards, and there is a blocked fireplace in the left-hand bedroom, along with old cupboards that have wrought-iron strap hinges. The roof features collar trusses.
