Description
The Ramsden War Memorial is a First World War memorial located in the center of the village, at the junction of Ramsden High Street and Akerman Street, north of the Church of St James.
Constructed from stone, the memorial features a pedestal made of rendered brick and rubblestone, with marble panels. It resembles a miniature mausoleum, consisting of a square central block surrounded by round-headed arches supported by Corinthian columns, giving it a Jacobean style. At the center of the roof, an octagonal obelisk or spire rises, topped with a torch finial. Each face of the central block has a marble panel that lists the names of the deceased along with their cause of death—either 'KILLED IN ACTION', 'DIED OF WOUNDS', or 'DIED OF FEVER'—and the date of death. Above each panel, a lunette is carved with a laurel wreath and a banner featuring lettering. The substantial pedestal is octagonal in shape at the base and transitions to a square at the top. The entire structure is set on a shallow octagonal cement base adorned with pebbles.
