Description
SS 90 SW CADBURY 8/50 Terley 5.4.66 II Farmhouse, disused at time of survey (1986). Probably an early C18 rebuilding of an earlier house. Cement rendered cob on stone rubble footings ; thatched roof with plain ridge, gabled at right end, hipped at front of left wing ; projecting rear right lateral stack, axial stack to right of centre, rear left stack, projecting front stack to wing. Plan: L plan, the main range facing south with a crosswing at the left end. Internal detail and the unusual proximity of the 2 right hand stacks suggests that the right (east) end dates, in part, from a C17 building phase, the remainder of the house is probably an early C18 rebuilding re-using 2 C17 windows, with the possibility that the axial stack was inserted in the old cross passage. Single depth main range with a lobby entrance to the left in front of an unheated rear service room; 2 heated rooms to the right. The left end crosswing is divided between 2 heated rooms (the front room larger and grander) with an axial stair between them. The lobby entrance is especially interesting since, with the stair rising from it, it provides access both to the first floor and 3 of the 4 ground floor rooms. The function of the individual rooms is not entirely clear although the front room in the wing appears to have been the best parlour and the right hand room in the main range has been used as a kitchen. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 1:4 window front with the front door into the main range immediately to the right of the crosswing with a slated porch canopy carried on a shaped timber bracket. The wing has 2 and 3-light casements with glazing bars, the main range has C20 fenestration, probably in enlarged embrasures except for the window above the front door which is a C17 3-light ovolo-moulded timber mullioned window with square leaded panes. There is a similar C17 window on the first floor of the left return, lighting the stair. Interior All the ground floor rooms have chamfered ceiling beams, 2 with rudimentary runout stops. The front room in the wing has an C18 timber chimneypiece with foliage carving. The right hand room of the main range has a partly blocked fireplace possibly concealing C17 features. A doorway with a chamfered stopped lintel gives access to a rounded recess adjacent to the chimneybreast of the middle room. The middle room fireplace has a C20 grate, possibly concealing earlier features. C18 joinery and a good C18 chimneypiece survive on the first floor. Roof: a apex pegged roof trusses, probably of an C18 date. An interesting transitional plan form illustrating the integration of the principal entrance with the stair.
