Description
The barn at Upcott Barton is a threshing barn that may date back to the 18th century or earlier, with a roof that was replaced in the 19th century. It is built of cob on stone rubble footings and features a slate roof that is half-hipped at the left end and hipped at the right end. This large barn is positioned on a slope and is oriented at right angles to Upcott Barton.
The barn has two sets of opposed doors; the right end may have been used for storage, while the left end and center were likely used for threshing. The left and center sections are single-storey, while the right end is lofted. The front elevation displays two sets of double doors with cob cheeks, and the right-hand doorway has chamfered jambs. There is also a doorway with a timber lintel at the right, located below a loft doorway that also features a timber lintel.
On the rear elevation, there are double doors with cheeks, and the left end is rendered, containing one ground floor and one first floor window. A loft entrance is located in the left gable end. Inside, the barn has 19th-century roof trusses and a cob partition that does not reach the apex, separating the single-storey and lofted sections. This barn is unusually large and complete, forming an impressive group with Upcott Barton.
