Description

The Meads is a house dating from the 18th century, with 20th-century alterations and an addition. The building is whitewashed and rendered, likely with stone at the first floor level, while the thinner walls include brick at the first floor. It features a thatched roof with a plain ridge that is hipped at the ends for the main block, and a slate-roofed 20th-century addition that sits under a lower roofline at the right end. The single-storey block has a stack at the left end and a rear lateral stack, with a right end stack on the addition.

The plan consists of a single-depth, two-room layout with a central entrance facing a straight stair. One of the rooms was presumably the kitchen, although it is unclear which one. In the 20th century, a single-storey outbuilding to the right of the house was converted into accommodation and linked to the house by a two-storey, one-room plan linking block.

The exterior is two storeys high, with an approximately symmetrical three-window front for the thatched block and two windows for the slate-roofed addition. There is a canted bay on the single-storey block at the right end. The thatched block has a central entrance with a thatched porch. The first-floor windows on the left and center are likely 18th century or early 19th century sliding sashes, while the right-hand windows on both floors are two-light casements with small panes. The ground floor window on the left has replacement 20th-century glazing. There is a lean-to porch at the angle between the thatched and slate-roofed blocks, with the latter being slightly set back and featuring two-light small pane casements.

The interior has been largely modernized but retains some 18th-century joinery. The roof space has not been inspected.
