Description
Abbotsford is a house, likely originally a church house, dating back to the 17th century, with renovations in the 20th century. It is constructed of local stone rubble, with the front elevation largely colourwashed and rendered. The roof is thatched, with a simple ridge and gables at the ends, featuring a left-end stack with a brick shaft and a rear lateral stack with a brick shaft. The house has a single-depth, three-room plan, with the main entrance now located to the left of centre. A glebe map from 1814 indicates that there were formerly external stone steps at the extreme left of the front, leading to a first-floor entrance. A substantial fireplace to the left-end stack suggests the left-end room may have been used for baking bread for the church. The exterior is asymmetrical, featuring a four-window front. The upper-right window is a four-light casement with glazing bars; other windows have been re-glazed relatively recently but retain their original window surrounds. The interior is reported to include a large fireplace with stone jambs on the ground floor left side, and exposed beams in each ground floor room.
