Description
Perry Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around the early 16th century, with significant remodelling in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The building is likely constructed of cob and stone, with a whitewashed and rendered exterior. The left end wall has been rebuilt in brick, and the roof is thatched with a plain ridge and a hip at the left end. An adjoining barn is located at the right end. The farmhouse features an axial stack with a rendered shaft, and a left-end stack with a brick shaft.
The probable original plan was a three-room arrangement with a through passage, characteristic of late medieval origins and with the lower end to the right. The hall was likely floored in the late 16th or early 17th century, and the hall stack was added backing onto the through passage. A rear left wing, set at a right angle to the inner room, is likely a later addition.
The exterior presents an asymmetrical three-window front with eaves that create an eyebrow shape over the first-floor windows. The front door is located to the right of the centre, leading into the through passage. The windows are 2-light and 3-light casements dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, with glazing bars.
The interior was not inspected during a 1986 survey, but it is reported to contain smoke-blackened roof timbers, rafters, and thatch, as well as late 16th or early 17th century carpentry on the ground floor. Historical records suggest a possible connection to William atte Purie from 1330. A full survey record by Charles Hulland is held in the West Country Studies Library.
