Description
Moat Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the late 16th century, which was remodeled in the mid to late 20th century. It is constructed of rubble that is rendered but has an exposed plinth, topped with a thatched roof. The building has a nearly symmetrical one-and-a-half storey single depth plan, featuring a rear lateral stack and a half-hipped roof with eyebrow dormers. Inside, there is a central rear winder staircase.
The windows are all wooden casements with rectangular leading; the front has three and four-light windows with moulded mullions on the first floor, and the ground floor features inset four-centred heads to the lights with spandrel sinking, likely rebuilt using some early fabric. The central plank door is set back within a frame, with curved braces forming a pointed head, and is located in a panel of exposed rubble.
On the left side, there are 20th-century casements at each level, while the right side is plain. The rear has two two-light eyebrow dormers above two two-light windows and one one-light window, all made of untreated hardwood, similar to the front. Between the upper windows, there is an external stack that steps above eaves level, along with two buttresses that are tile-coped below the eaves.
Inside, the cottage features a central hall with a slate floor and a room on each side. The kitchen on the left retains early beams, while the room on the right has 20th-century transverse beams and a 20th-century corner fireplace. The 20th-century stairs are round and enclosed by a central cupboard. There are no early details on the first floor, and the roof structure is from the 20th century. Moat Cottage retains some 16th-century fabric and is significant as part of the group with the Gatehouse, North Range, and Stable Block at Bickleigh Castle, contributing to its high group value.
