Description

House, dating from the 17th century with an extension dating from around the early 20th century. The house is whitewashed and rendered, with a thatched roof at the left end adjoining Wells Place. The thatched roof is half-hipped to the front of the right crosswing and there are two axial chimney stacks. The plan arrangement and the relationship with Wells Place are unclear, though a blocked doorway between the properties at first floor level suggests that they were once a single property, potentially the result of a later subdivision. The house has a single-depth plan with two heated rooms at the left and an early 20th century crosswing added to the right. While the original front doorway position is unclear, a doorway into the right-hand 17th century room on the front has been blocked, and the house is now entered on the front at the left. The house has two storeys and an asymmetrical two-window front, with a 20th century front door to the left. Windows are timber casements with small panes. The two 17th century rooms have chamfered axial beams with scroll stops. The left-hand room has a fireplace with stone jambs and a replaced lintel, and there are traces of a former newel stair near the stack. The right-hand room has a 20th century grate, which may be concealing older features. When the crosswing was added, an angle fireplace was incorporated using the right-hand 17th century stack. The roof space over the right-hand end of the 17th century range has pegged rafters, likely dating from the 18th century, and no main truss. Together with Wells Place, Hayridge forms a good thatched group adjacent to the road.
