Description

Crossbury Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is built of unrendered stone rubble and features a slate roof with gable ends. There is a brick stack at the left end and a rear lateral stone rubble stack with a brick shaft that heats the room to the right of the cross-passage.

The layout consists of a two-room-and-cross-passage plan, with a parlour on the right and a large service end on the left that contains the staircase. The service end seems to have been partitioned in the past to create an unheated central room, and there is a further staircase located beyond the parlour at the upper end. The farmhouse has two storeys and a four-window range, with 20th-century windows.

A notable feature is the two-storey porch with a gabled roof and a slate pentice roof supported on moulded brackets that have grotesque foliate heads above the cross-passage doorway, which has a plank door. There is also a slate roof over the dairy outshut at the rear.

Inside, the farmhouse has been significantly altered in the 20th century, but some two- and three-panelled doors remain at the upper end. The roof structure was replaced in the late 19th century or early 20th century.
