Description

Rapscott Cottage is a house that likely dates from the early 19th century, with alterations and an addition made in the mid to late 19th century. It is rendered, probably over cob, and sits on a stone rubble plinth. The cottage has a gable-ended roof covered with 20th-century asbestos slate, and features 19th-century brick stacks on the front range and a stone stack at the rear.

The building has a two-room plan facing south. The larger room on the left was probably a former kitchen, while the smaller room on the right was likely a former parlour. There is a central entrance and staircase, with integral end stacks. At the rear, there are probably two-storey outshuts from the 19th century and a wing that projects at right angles to the rear, also with an integral end stack. The cottage is two storeys high.

The exterior has a roughly symmetrical front with three bays, where the windows are positioned to the right. The mid-19th-century windows are boxed 4-pane sashes. The entrance features a roughly central 20th-century boarded door framed by a 19th-century beaded pegged frame, which is accessed by three stone steps.

Inside, the cottage retains many early 19th-century fixtures and fittings. The entrance lobby leads to the left-hand ground-floor room, which has an old boarded door, and the right-hand room features an early 19th-century door with four moulded panels. The early 19th-century staircase is also present. The left-hand room has an open fireplace with an early 19th-century beaded surround and three panels above, topped with a moulded wooden cornice. There is an early 19th-century cupboard in the rear room with two two-panelled doors above and two one-panelled doors below. The right-hand room includes an early 19th-century fireplace with a reeded architrave, frieze, and moulded cornice, along with an early 19th-century cupboard to the right of the fireplace featuring two two-panelled doors, a cupboard below, and a moulded architrave. There is also an early 19th-century cupboard in the rear wall with two two-panelled doors and a moulded architrave, as well as window seats. The first-floor room and roof space were not inspected.

Rapscott Cottage is part of a farmstead group that includes Great Rapscott Farmhouse and Little Rapscott.
