Description
This is a large chest tomb located about 1 metre northwest of the northeast path in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary in Tetbury. It dates from the mid-18th century and is made of limestone. The tomb is rectangular with indented corners and features a tall moulded plinth on a large base. It has moulded capping and heavy baluster ends adorned with upturned gadroon decoration along the base. An egg and dart frieze runs along the top, with small drapery swathes on the returns to the southeast.
The central rectangular panel has egg and dart moulding to the south, which includes an oval inscription panel topped with a cherub and drapery swathes. The northern side features a tall oval panel with festooned drapery. The large cap of the tomb has elaborately scrolled ends and a square centre that displays five cherub heads in high relief to the south and three skulls to the north, along with a moulded rectangular finial. This tomb is noted for its unusually rich design, situated in a very rich churchyard.
