Description

The stables at The Vicarage are a stable block dating from the late 18th century, likely built around the same time as the latest wing of the Vicarage in 1771. The structure is made of random coursed rubble stone with quoins and features a central ashlar gable. It has a string band at the cornice level and a hipped slate roof. The building is a single range with a large central coped gable that slightly projects, which includes a keyed oculus and a round-headed carriage arch. Above the arch is a metal Sun Assurance plaque (number 402649) positioned directly above the voussoirs, and there are shaped double timber doors that are probably from the 20th century. On each side of the central arch, there are round-headed arches with even voussoirs, each featuring a semi-circular fanlight with two mullions and a plain timber door. The rear of the building has rubble stone as part of the perimeter wall, which includes two square openings with wooden shutters located under the eaves. The interior still contains loose boxes, and there is a weathervane atop the gable. The forecourt is cobbled.
