Description
Lower Waverley Cottages is a former row of three houses, now comprising two, dating from the early 18th century with 19th-century porches. The building is constructed from random rubble limestone with ashlar dressings and features a plain tile roof. Internally, the structure has been altered from three single-room, two-storey houses with attics. There is a single-storey wing at the back of No 2 and a two-storey wing at the back of No 1.
The front facade has three windows with doorways in between, featuring Tudor-arched heads to the porch openings. There is evidence of a blocked doorway with a small single-light window that has a chamfered surround to the right. The windows are primarily two-light with recessed flat-faced mullions, and there are three hipped roof dormers with 19th-century casements. The building has two ridge chimneys with unmoulded caps.
At the west end gable of No 1, there is a timber casement with a flat stone lintel. The gabled ends of the back wings include a tall chimney with a chamfered cap for No 2 and a two-light chamfered mullioned window with a hood on the upper floor of No 1. The back of the main range has scattered fenestration, mainly two-light windows with recessed flat-faced mullions. The doorway to No 2 features a timber lintel, and there is an artificial stone lean-to added on the east side of the back wing of No 1.
