Description
The kiosk is a K6 telephone kiosk, a standardised design dating from the 20th century. It is made of cast iron and painted red overall, with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. The crowns on the top panels are applied, not perforated. Rectangular white display signs read “TELEPHONE” beneath the shallow-curved roof. The interior has been modernized with updated equipment and the kiosk appears to be in good condition.
The kiosk is positioned amongst woodland at the western end of Edgeworth village, approximately 25 metres south of the former Post Office, now the cottages at 1-3 Terrace Cottages (Grade II). It forms a noticeable visual connection with those listed buildings when viewed from various angles.
The K6 telephone kiosk is a significant example of 20th century industrial design, created in 1935 by Giles Gilbert Scott for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee. It was developed from Scott’s earlier K2 telephone kiosk design of 1924, which drew inspiration from Neo-classical architecture. The K6 was designed to be more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective to mass produce. As a development of architectural tradition adapted to contemporary needs, and with over 70,000 examples produced, the K6 telephone kiosks represent a notable architectural achievement. Many were replaced in the 1960s, but the remaining kiosks remain iconic features of the British landscape. The kiosk is located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
