Description

The Cottages is a row of three houses, now divided into two dwellings, dating from the 16th century and extended in the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The structure is timber-framed with rendered infill set on a tall limestone rubble base, featuring some coursed limestone rubble end walls. The thatched roof is half-hipped at the west end and has brick ridge stacks at the east end and to the west of the center.

The building consists of four framed bays, with the second bay from the east end serving as a narrow cross-passage bay that has a large rubble chimney backing onto it, alongside another large chimney at the east end. It is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers. The framing displays two and three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, and there is a truncated collar and tie-beam truss with four struts at the west end.

On the north front elevation, the ground floor features two 2-light casements, a 3-light casement, and a 20th-century rectangular light. There are two ledged and battened doors; the right door has a flat canopy supported by wrought iron brackets and is blocked, as the main entrance to No 3 is now located in the west gable end. The attic lights in the west gable end flank a 17th-century window of four lights, which is now blocked. The interior of No 1 has been inspected and includes lateral main ceiling beams on consoles, retaining a large fireplace. The framing of No 1 suggests it is older than the rest of the building.
