Description

ASHTON UNDER HILL CP COTTONS LANE (south side) SO 9838 - 9938 7/16 Croft Cottage GV II

House. Early C17, restored and extended mid- to late C20. Timber-framed with rendered infill on limestone rubble base with limestone rubble end walling and thatched roof. Two framed bays aligned north/south; external rubble chimney with offsets and brick stack at south end. Single storey and attic with dormers. Framing: three panels from sill to wall-plate, short solid upper corner braces and collar and tie-beam trusses at ends, south end one has two collars with two struts to lower and one strut to upper collar, north end one has two struts to single collar and V-struts in apex. East front elevation: windows are all C20 leaded casements. On the ground floor are three 2-light windows and there are two eyebrow dormers with 3-light windows. Main entrance to left of north bay has a thatched porch (the thatch continuing down from the main roof) on timber posts and a glazed C20 door. There is a possible original cambered doorhead in the south bay. Interior not inspected. C20 single-storey addition to south end and to rear right.
