Description

Coppice Cottage is a house located on Cotton Lane in Ashton Under Hill, dated 1623, with mid-19th century and late 20th century alterations. The building features a mix of part timber-framed construction with rendered infill on a limestone rubble base, as well as painted brick and limestone rubble. It has slate roofs and a prominent large ashlar stack at the north end of the ridge, which includes two tall square stacks with moulded caps and a frieze inscribed with the date "1623".

The house has a hall and cross-wing plan, with the hall section rebuilt and consisting of a single bay aligned north to south. This part includes a large chimney at the north end and a circular bread oven. The cross-wing, which adjoins the south end, contains two framed bays. The building is two storeys high with an attic.

The framing features three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, short straight solid braces in the upper corners, and collar and tie-beam trusses with two collars, three struts to the lower collar, and two to the upper collar. On the west front elevation, the hall part has two ground floor 4-pane sashes with cambered heads and two first floor 2-light casements. The cross-wing gable end has 2-light casements on both the ground and first floors, with an attic light in the east end of the cross-wing. The main entrance, located in the east elevation of the hall part, features a 20th century gabled timber porch and a 20th century door. The interior has not been inspected.
