Description

ASHTON UNDER HILL CP COTTONS LANE (south side) SO 9838 - 9938 7/18 22/19 Coppice Cottage (formerly 30-7-59 listed as Glenwood) II Shown on OS map as Glenwood. House. Dated 1623 with mid-C19 and late C20 alterations. Part timber-framed with rendered infill on limestone rubble base, part painted brick and limestone rubble; slate roofs and large ashlar stack at north end of ridge which has two tall square stacks with moulded caps and frieze inscribed with date "1623". Hall and cross-wing plan; hall part is rebuilt and of a single bay aligned north/south and has large chimney at north end (see above) and circular bread oven; cross-wing of two framed bays adjoins south end. Two storeys and attic. Framing: three panels from sill to wall-plate, short straight solid braces in upper corners and collar and tie-beam trusses with two collars, three struts to lower collar and two to upper collar. West front elevation: hall part has two ground floor 4-pane sashes with cambered heads and two first floor 2-light casements. Cross-wing gable end has a ground and first floor 2-light casement. Attic light in east end of cross-wing. Main entrance in east elevation of hall part has a C20 gabled timber porch and C20 door. Interior not inspected.
